This article covers Custom Mobile Driver Profiles for advanced device and session control, and a quick-reference table for common Mobile Recorder issues.
Custom Mobile Driver Profiles
A Custom Mobile Driver Profile is a JSON document of session capabilities applied when the device session starts. Reach for one when you need to:
- Target a specific platform version or device configuration
- Automate iOS real devices requiring code signing
- Debug session initialization issues
What a Profile Configures
- The Appium automation engine (XCUITest, UiAutomator2)
- Platform version targeting
- Device orientation at launch
- Application launch behaviors
- iOS code signing (xcodeOrgId, xcodeSigningId)
Note: Recorder sessions run on devices local to the Agent machine (physical devices, emulators, simulators). Cloud device providers apply to formal executions, not to the recorder.
Applying a Profile to a Recording Session
In the Select Mobile Recorder Device dialog, toggle Custom Mobile Driver Profile ON, choose a profile, and Proceed. The profile applies to the current session only.
Managing Profiles
Create and manage profiles in Resources > Driver Profiles. Profiles are reusable across recording sessions and formal runs. For capability JSON examples, see Mobile Driver Profile for test Executions.
Troubleshooting Quick Reference
| Issue | Resolution |
|---|---|
| "Record/Playback requires a locally running Agent" | Start the Agent, then Refresh. Follow the installation link if not installed. |
| "No Devices Connected" | Connect a device via USB (with USB debugging enabled) or start an emulator. Run "adb devices" for Android; ensure Xcode for iOS. Restart the Agent if the device was connected after it started. |
| Elements not highlighting on hover | Ensure the recorder is ON. Identification is disabled when OFF. |
| WebView elements not detected | Switch to Web Mode (Option+C / Alt+C) and wait a few seconds. See WebViews in Hybrid Apps for the debugging-flag and app-launch requirements. |
| Device selection not persisting | Expected behavior. Reselect the device after an Agent restart or session termination. |
| Mapping prompt not appearing | Prompts occur only during interactive playback, and only when the element lacks an instance for the current platform. |
| Playback fails at a step | Ensure the app is on the right screen for the statements selected. Review the Element Timeout in Playback Settings. |
